TWO GREAT BOOKS

The Way of Kata,
A Comprehensive Guide to Deciphering Martial Applications
&
Lesson from the Dojo Floor

Saying The Way of Kata by Lawrence Kane and Kris Wilder is a great book is an understatement. What an addition to traditional Okinawa Karate. This is not another book of complicated and questionable techniques or weird physiological theories.

Our katas are a systematic set of practical and proven combat techniques—if you understand kaisai no genri, the theory of deciphering kata applications. And, no other publication will or can help you do so more than The Way of Kata.

Now I admit, I am predisposed to the book's material and concepts to begin with. But, from the very first when I scanned the chapters and their contents I quickly realized this is a work that is needed and long time coming.

If you got the book for just the fifteen general principles to identify effective kata techniques and the twelve discrete rules for deciphering martial applications, it would well be worth the price. But, there are 261 pages of well organized materials for easy reference and understanding.

The book can be ordered from Amazon.com. Or to download one of the book's chapters, you can go to http://www.westseattlekarate.com/books.html

Like most, I have tried to own, read, or look at every martial art book I could get my hands on. Regardless of ones style or system, when it comes to understanding Kata, this may be the only book you will ever need to own.

Lesson from the Dojo Floor
Based on a lifetime of study, Lesson from the Dojo Floor is a revitalizing look at martial arts. The messages contained within will help each of us identify our training for what it is, and the reasons we train. Said in Kris Wilder's straightforward manner, Lessons from the Dojo Floor consists of insightful stories and viewpoints not commonly expressed in today's martial arts.

Lessons from the Dojo Floor not only educates and entertains, it will ultimately challenge every martial artist from beginner to black belt.

In my opinion Kris is not only a knowledgeable martial artist, he is also a first class gentleman. He started practicing the martial arts at the age of fifteen. Through the years, Kris has earned Dan rankings in three styles: Goju-ryu Karate, Tae Kwon Do, and Judo, in which he has competed in senior national and international tournaments. Kris has had the opportunity to train under skilled instructors, including Olympic athletes, state champions, national champions, and gifted martial artists who take their lineage directly from the founders of their systems.
